University entrance qualification (HZB)
German: Hochschulzugangsberechtigung
Reviewed by Sajid ur Rehman— MSc Physics candidate, University of MünsterLast updated 20 July 2026
The Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (HZB) is your university entrance qualification — the evidence that your prior education entitles you to study at a German university. For international applicants it may be your school certificate, a Studienkolleg + Feststellungsprüfung, or a completed year of university at home.
Why it matters for applicants from Pakistan, India & Bangladesh
Knowing whether your certificate is a direct HZB, or whether you need a Studienkolleg first, decides your whole timeline for the university route.
